MONFEMNET Participates in UPR Pre-Session 50 in Geneva

The MONFEMNET National Network participated in Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Pre-Session 50, held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 26–29 August 2025, where it presented findings and recommendations from its independent report to international delegates.

The report, titled “The Care Economy: The Structural Impact of Women’s Employment and Unpaid Care Work,” examines how the unequal distribution of unpaid care work affects women’s economic participation and enjoyment of human rights in Mongolia.

The Universal Periodic Review is a key mechanism of the United Nations Human Rights Council through which the human rights record of every UN Member State is reviewed periodically. The process provides an opportunity for States to receive recommendations aimed at strengthening the protection and implementation of human rights.

MONFEMNET’s report highlights that the disproportionate burden of unpaid care work significantly restricts women’s participation in the labour market, weakens their economic independence, and increases their vulnerability to poverty.

It also draws attention to the structural barriers that arise when care responsibilities are treated primarily as a private or family matter rather than as an issue requiring public policy, services, financing, and social protection.

Through its participation in the UPR Pre-Session, MONFEMNET called for stronger recognition of the social and economic value of care work and for policies that support a more gender-equitable labour market.

The Network also emphasised the importance of expanding accessible care services and strengthening public support systems so that women can participate fully and equally in economic and public life.

By bringing the care economy into the UPR process, MONFEMNET seeks to ensure that unpaid care work is recognised not only as an economic issue, but also as a human rights and gender equality concern requiring sustained policy attention.
