“Nomadic Mothers” Programme to Launch in Bornuur Soum, Tuv Province

The “Nomadic Mothers” Programme is set to launch in Bornuur Soum, Tuv Province, with the aim of strengthening support, participation, and access to services for herder women and their families.

Reaching nomadic households consistently can be challenging, as herder families move seasonally throughout the year. However, many herder women spend certain periods in soum centres to care for their children, particularly in relation to schooling and access to services. Working with women during these periods creates opportunities for more regular engagement with herder families and communities.

Building connections and responding to everyday realities

The “Nomadic Mothers” Programme will create opportunities for herder women living temporarily or seasonally in soum centres to connect with one another, exchange experiences, and build supportive networks.

The programme will also focus on strengthening digital skills and access, helping to reduce the digital divide experienced by nomadic communities and improve their ability to access information and services.

Another priority is to explore practical ways of improving access to social welfare, healthcare, and psychosocial support services in ways that better reflect the realities of nomadic life.

The programme will also examine possible solutions for reducing the intensive burden of unpaid care and domestic work carried by herder households, including opportunities to introduce labour-saving and mechanised solutions where appropriate.

Preparing for local implementation

In preparation for the programme, meetings were held with representatives of the local government and community leaders in Bornuur Soum to discuss local priorities, opportunities for collaboration, and ways to ensure that activities respond to the needs and experiences of herder women.

We extend our appreciation to the staff of the Governor’s Office of Bornuur Soum, Tuv Province, for welcoming the initiative and expressing their willingness to collaborate in its implementation.
